Sport Physiotherapy Certificate


Shelly brings to Cove Sport Therapy a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Physiotherapy from Dalhousie University. Shelly has achieved numerous continuing education courses including a Sports Physiotherapy Certificate, Level 3 Manual Therapy (in E3/V3 system), Courses in Muscle Balance by Shirley Sahrmann, Acupuncture AFC, and Intramuscular Gokavi Transverse Technique Acupuncture.
Throughout her career, Shelly has been a very active member of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association . She has held National Division Chair positions for the past 6 years, first with Sport Physiotherapy Canada , and most recently as the National Chairperson of the Animal Rehab Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association. Shelly has been an invited speaker and presented at provincial, national, and international physiotherapy conferences on numerous topics relating to physiotherapy.

In 2007, Shelly was the recipient of the Nova Scotia Physiotherapy Association’s ‘Silver Award’ for demonstrating outstanding contributions to the physiotherapy profession through clinical practice, education, and professional contribution.

Participation in sports and coaching have always been a very big part of Shelly’s life. In her own sporting career she won numerous National Championships, and medal finishes in women’s canoe events. In her coaching career, Shelly coached young athletes in Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, and Volleyball. In Canoe Kayak Shelly achieved a Level 3 Certification through the National Coaching Certification Program and had the opportunity to coach many elite Canoe Kayak athletes in the developmental stages of their careers.

Shelly continues to have an interest in helping young athletes to improve their sport performance and ensure long sporting careers and active lives through Sport Specific Functional Screens , and an Knee Injury Prevention Program.

Shelly’s physiotherapy work experience includes 12 years of practice at The Physioclinic, where she treated everyone from elite level athletes to the general public. Shelly was the Physiotherapist for the Dalhousie Tigers Men’s Hockey Team from 1995-1999. She coordinated the Dalhousie Varsity Therapy Program and The Physioclinic Special Events Team from 1998-2002.

Shelly has worked with many teams at the regional, provincial, and national level, and provided medical coverage at numerous major sporting events including positions of Chief Therapist for CIAU Men’s Basketball Championships from 1998-2004 and Skate Canada in 2004 and 2007. Shelly also received a World Championship Gold Medal in 1999, when she travelled to Three Nations Cup, and World Hockey Championships in Sweden and Finland as Team Physiotherapist for the Canadian Women’s Hockey Team.

As part of the Integrated Support Team for Canadian Sport Center Atlantic , Shelly is happy to be an approved service provider helping to support the achievement of high performance sport excellence by Canadian Athletes.

Shelly is currently a Team Physiotherapist with the Canadian National Canoe Kayak Team which keeps her busy locally and travelling- she has joined the team for several Florida Spring Training Camps, World Cup in Poznan Poland May 2009, Canoe ‘09 World Championships on our very own Lake Banook, World Cup in Dusiburg Germany May 2011, and will head to Mexio for Pan Am Games in October.

Shelly’s role with Canoe Kayak also extends to International Para canoe Classifier and Classifier Trainer for the International Canoe Federation.
